Term 3 Week 6

Howick Historical Village

Our new Inquiry unit began this week, we are going to be exploring how and why the way people play has changed over time.  This is going to be a wonderful unit that will allow your daughters to speak to you and grandparents about games and toys that you played with when you were their age.  If you have an 'old' toy that you are happy for us to look at, we would love you to bring it in to share!

For the Ignition phase in our new Inquiry we visited the Howick Historical Village.  The girls looked excellent all dressed up and they were genuinely fascinated by the Village and the way that people used to live.

We began our morning having a lesson in the olden day classroom - the teacher their was very strict and she had a cane which she kept loudly whacking over her desk!
Next we played with some old toys outside which included skittles, ring toss, a piece of rope for skipping, wooden horses, quoits and stilts.  Then we had a chance to play some parlor games and then we used some old toys and games.

We really enjoyed our free time to explore the village and look in all the old homes.  The girls were amazed that some of the early cottages/whares were made out of plants (raupo)  Overall we had a fantastic day which the girls all really enjoyed.

Term 3 Week 5

Wow! What a Busy Week

Monday
Hooray! Today we finally met Harold the giraffe and Lynn in the Life Education Caravan. We learnt that we are special and there is only one of me! We learnt about how we have to keep our bodies clean and healthy so we can grow and learn. We also learnt what happens inside our body with the help of Tam the doll. We discovered where our stomachs, lungs, heart and brain are, what size they are and what jobs they do.

Wednesday

Margaret Mahy Day! The girls looked amazing dressed up as characters from Margaret Mahy books. We had a great time parading around and seeing some of the other costumes too. The girls enjoyed their buddies reading their favourite Margaret Mahy stories to them.

 Thursday
100 Days Smarter! We had a little celebration on our 100th day at school with a shared lunch, including a special cake made for us by Mrs Buller.

Friday
Jump Rope for Heart - today was when the girls put their legs to the test in our skip-all-morning event. We had lots of different interactive stations, all to raise sponsorship for The National Heart Foundation. The girls "skipped their hearts out" and had loads of fun doing it!

Term 3 Week 4

We have had a fantastic week at school and have enjoyed exploring our class Post Office, Supermarket, Hair Salon and Doctor's Surgery learning centres. Take a look at the delight on the girls faces as they interact in them.

Even Mrs Brewin was treated to a cup of tea in the salon

Doesn't Mrs Brewin look beautiful?

Alice is posting yet another letter!

Natalie was busy writing her shopping list.

In strand maths we have been talking about measurement. We have been using blocks to measure our teddies. See us busy at work.

Next Week is a very busy week!
Monday is the Father/daughter breakfast. I hope you have a fabulous time if you are going.

Tuesday evening there is a parent meeting about numeracy on 6pm which may be of interest to you. Please check 'The Messenger' for more details.

Wednesday Margaret Mahy day

Thursday 100 Days at School
This year the girls have been counting off 100 Days at School.  This is part of my Numeracy programme and is another way to help teach the girls numeral recognition, place value, skip counting and the concepts around time.  Next Thursday will be our 100th Day at School and it's time to celebrate!  We are celebrating with a variety of '100' based activities and (most importantly!) our shared lunch.  We would really appreciate it if each of the girls could bring a small plate to share with the class.    It would be great if we could have a mix of healthy foods and treat stuff too.  I will liase with Felicity about this.
